Engaging with Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ) in Vail provides a transformative experience for everyone involved, from the positive environment you can work to create for our athletes to the lasting impact that will be left on your own heart after every Special Olympics Arizona event. By participating, you have the opportunity to support essential community programs for individuals and families with special needs, and make a lasting impact through your dedication. This involvement offers a chance to connect with the local community, increase your understanding of your neighbors, enjoy the fulfillment of giving back, and have some fun while doing it.

Whether you’re cheering for athletes, helping with event coordination, or providing emotional support to athletes and their families, every volunteer plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive and empowering environment at Special Olympics Arizona. Some volunteers worry that they don’t have the right skill set to serve their community at SOAZ events, but we know that all you need is enthusiasm. We’ll work hard to find the best position for you, whether that is working behind the scenes to organize one of our amazing events, or standing at the finish line cheering our athletes across. All of our events celebrate athletic talent and personal development while nurturing deep connections of friendship, empathy, and acceptance within the Vail community.

Joining the SOAZ team means more than just contributing to event success; it means building lasting relationships with other volunteers, community members, and, most importantly, the athletes. The power of sports extends beyond the game, touching the lives of everyone involved. Volunteering with SOAZ is more than a time commitment—it is an expression of love, a way to spread joy, and an opportunity to create lasting memories with your community.

With a variety of events year-round and many volunteer opportunities in Vail, there are numerous ways for you to get involved meaningfully, whether through continuous engagement or occasional support. We look forward to welcoming new volunteers and celebrating our athletes’ achievements alongside you!

Volunteers are the backbone of the Special Olympics movement. They are coaches, trainers, officials, event organizers, fundraisers, and event volunteers. They can also be unified partners playing alongside athletes with intellectual disabilities or fans cheering in the stands.

Rewarding for All

Joining SOAZ as a volunteer in Vail is an excellent way to positively impact your community and yourself. SOAZ offers a wide range of opportunities for both new and experienced volunteers to engage in meaningful work that benefits athletes and the larger community. Building relationships with the SOAZ team, fellow volunteers, and our remarkable athletes brings immense joy and satisfaction. Whether you’re available for a single afternoon or looking for ongoing involvement, each volunteer is crucial in helping our athletes realize their full potential.

Our volunteers span all age groups, from young children to adults and seniors, all bringing their enthusiasm and commitment to our events. Children as young as seven can participate in Special Olympics Arizona activities, and younger kids can join in by cheering on their siblings and athletes. Every volunteer’s unique strengths—dedication, vigor, and enthusiasm—help our athletes thrive. The impressive impact SOAZ has today is thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. We are incredibly thankful to every Vail community member who generously gives their time and passion to support our athletes and events. Each volunteer’s effort, no matter how small, helps create the supportive and welcoming community we cherish.

Spirit of Giving

Central to our organization is a steadfast commitment to transformative endeavors, passionately supported by our athletes, staff, and volunteers, who exemplify the core values of teamwork and empathy. Volunteers are integral to cultivating a sense of inclusion and connection within the Vail community and enriching the lives of our athletes. Through their compassionate and selfless actions, volunteers build a strong support network and sense of community. Their dedication significantly enhances every event and positively affects every athlete they interact with. Volunteers, as symbols of hope and inspiration, enable us to foster an inclusive and kind environment. Our volunteers aren’t just a beacon of hope and understanding at our events; they have the opportunity to leave each of our events with a new perspective, and bring their understanding and compassion out into their community and the world.

Special Olympics Arizona is always active! With ongoing training sessions, competitive events, and a variety of other activities, there are countless opportunities for you to engage throughout the year. Browse our Vail event calendar to see how you can make a lasting impact on the SOAZ community.
