From Athlete to Advocate: Mike Tom’s Inspiring SOAZ Story

Mike Tom’s involvement with Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ) began during his junior high school years, when he first encountered the program through his PE class. What started as a simple introduction soon became a defining part of his life. His initial motivation for joining SOAZ was to meet new friends, stay active, and, most importantly, have fun. Over the years, his journey with Special Olympics Arizona has grown into something much more profound.

For Mike, Special Olympics Arizona is unique because of the opportunities it provides for individuals with disabilities to step out of their comfort zones, make connections, and embrace an active lifestyle. He vividly recalls witnessing a young athlete receive a medal for the first time. The excitement on the athlete’s face and the joy of sharing that moment with their parents left a lasting impact on him.

One of Mike’s most memorable experiences came in 2010 when he participated in the USA Games with the SOAZ football team. During the event, he made a bet with his sister—if he scored a touchdown, she would have to fulfill a challenge. Years later, the bet remains unsettled, a playful reminder of the lasting impact of his time in the Games.

Beyond competing, Mike has taken on leadership roles within the Special Olympics Arizona community. He serves as the Vice President of the Athlete Leadership Program, where he helps recruit new athletes and encourages them to get involved. Through biweekly meetings and training sessions, he works with fellow athletes to develop their leadership skills and advocate for the organization’s mission. One of his favorite moments in this role involved a friendly rivalry with Saul, the Athlete Leadership Senior Coordinator—after losing a basketball match, he got his revenge in a bowling game and humorously made Saul run bleachers in return.

Mike’s commitment to Special Olympics Arizona has only deepened with time. Recently, he joined the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Council, a position that holds special meaning for him. Having always participated in the Torch Runs, he cherishes the experience of seeing law enforcement officers take time out of their demanding schedules to support the athletes. He even had the honor of lighting the torch at an event, a moment that solidified his deep connection to the Special Olympics Arizona community. Now, in his new role, he looks forward to contributing fresh ideas and helping LETR continue to grow.

Outside of Special Olympics Arizona, Mike dedicates his time to volunteering at Banner Baywood Hospital, specifically in the food services department. His desire to help others extends beyond sports, as he finds fulfillment in assisting hospital staff and patients.

Through the years, Mike has grown from an athlete into a leader, mentor, and advocate within Special Olympics Arizona. Whether competing, leading, or volunteering, he remains dedicated to the mission of inclusion and empowerment. As he continues his journey, he hopes to bring more people into the Special Olympics Arizona family, ensuring that everyone has the chance to experience the same joy, friendship, and growth that he has found within the organization.
