Since joining Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ) as an intern in 2017, Ryan Betcher has played an instrumental role in the organization’s growth and impact. A graduate of the University of Arizona, Ryan began his journey with SOAZ as a health intern in the health programs division. His initial months as an intern quickly turned into a full-time role, where he became a vital part of the sports and programs team, serving as area staff in the Palo Verde and West Valley regions.
Ryan’s connection to SOAZ’s mission dates back to his youth. Throughout elementary, high school, and even college, he actively engaged with his peers with intellectual disabilities (ID), fostering meaningful friendships. His involvement in Best Buddies during high school further deepened his passion for inclusion and advocacy. While he never envisioned working full-time for an organization like SOAZ, the opportunity to blend his two passions—sports and health—proved to be a perfect fit.
As Special Olympics Arizona celebrates its 50th anniversary, Ryan reflects on the significance of reaching this milestone. To him, the longevity of SOAZ speaks to the organization’s unwavering commitment to serving individuals with ID. Over the decades, the movement has evolved, incorporating technological advancements, eSports, school programming, and expanded sports and health initiatives. The involvement of local sports teams and health organizations has further elevated the level of programming and outreach.
Among the many impactful moments during Ryan’s time with SOAZ, a standout experience occurred during the 2022 USA Games in Orlando. One athlete, who had always been hard of hearing, attended the Healthy Athletes program and discovered a new type of hearing aid that dramatically improved his hearing. This experience accentuated the importance of providing specialized services for athletes, many of whom may struggle to communicate their health needs effectively. Ryan sees Healthy Athletes as a transformative initiative that directly enhances participants’ well-being and quality of life. Another defining moment for Ryan was his participation as a unified partner in basketball at the World Games. The experience opened his eyes to the true essence of Unified Sports—breaking down barriers and fostering genuine inclusion. Seeing athletes with and without ID compete together on an equal playing field reinforced the organization’s mission of inclusion and empowerment.
Ryan believes that what makes SOAZ truly unique is its ability to provide something for everyone. Whether individuals wish to volunteer for a day, commit long-term as a coach, assist with event management, or contribute in other ways, the organization offers diverse opportunities. For the athletes, SOAZ is more than just a sports organization—it provides leadership development, health advocacy, and personal growth through initiatives such as eSports, athlete leadership programs, and health messengers. Looking ahead, Ryan envisions a future where SOAZ continues to break down barriers and expand its reach. Arizona’s vast geography challenges ensure that athletes across the state receive equal access to resources and opportunities. His hope is that in the next 50 years, SOAZ will successfully extend its high-quality programming to every corner of the state, ensuring that all athletes—regardless of location—have the same opportunities to thrive.
