2023 over the edge registration now open

fundraising event is open to the public for the very first time

Registration is now open for Special Olympics Arizona’s annual Over the Edge Challenge, an event that will feature SOAZ athletes, supporters and community members rappelling from a skyscraper high above downtown Phoenix, while raising money for SOAZ athletes and year-long programming.

This year’s Over the Edge will take place at the CityScape building on Saturday, Nov. 18, with those who accept the challenge rappelling the 27-story building.  This year for the first time the challenge is open to the public, so anyone can register and join in on the fun.  Online registration and information can be found at https://specialolympicsarizona.org/over-the-edge/.

Once registered, participants will be asked to fundraise a minimum of $1,000 to be guaranteed a rappel spot for Over the Edge.  The $1,000 represents the cost to support two athletes for an entire year at Special Olympics Arizona.  No prior ropes experience is necessary to participate.

“Over the Edge is one of the coolest events we host each year, this year we are excited to open it up to everyone in the community,” said Jamie Heckerman, President and CEO of Special Olympics Arizona.  “Not only is it a great way to raise money for Special Olympics Arizona, it also is a great opportunity for participants to step into the shoes of our athletes and face their fears as and understand what our athletes feel like going through challenges of everyday life.  It truly is an inspiring event.”

To assist with fundraising efforts, all registered participants will be set up with their very own personal fundraising website that they can use to solicit contributions for this heroic fundraiser from family, friends and coworkers.  Only those that reach the $1,000 fundraising minimum will be allowed to rappel – and all participants must be at the goal by November 12 to be assigned a preferred rappel spot.  Those not at the goal by November 12 will be assigned a remaining time slot, and those who have not reached the minimum goal on Over the Edge day (Nov 18) will be responsible for the remaining amount before rappelling.

“This event would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors, I want to give special thanks to RED Development, CityScape Phoenix and Law Enforcement Torch Run for their continued support of this great event,” Heckerman said.
